Visual Artist & Potter
David Gillanders, Potter.
It all started with a roll and bacon. During a local craft fair when the weather was grim, I ran home a made a couple of bacon rolls for myself and another trader, Stef, who was a Potter. Grateful for the gesture, he asked me into his studio to have a go on the potter’s wheel. I've loved making things my whole life. Woodworking, blacksmithing leather work but I had never tried pottery. At once I was in love. Spellbound by the cathartic meditative process that involves no noise, aggression or sparks flying. I was, and am hooked. A few months later I was clearing space and selling everything that wasn't bolted down to buy a kiln and am still exploring and loving the process.
As with the wet plate collodion process in my photographic work each piece is individually created. Unique, never to be duplicated. Even if I try 🙂 Deep at the heart of the process, and my practice, is the desire to make something not only beautiful and tactile but useful in everyday life.
I'm incredibly grateful to The Art Department for giving me this wonderful opportunity to present some of my work.
