As winter bites cold and hard across the UK i am reminded of the wonderful work of Eric Ravilious and his country walks, loving landscapes, winter scenes and a drawing style that set the romantic tone of 1930s and later 1940s when he was commissioned for national travel posters. In an age gone by we are reminded of the simplicity and beauty of hand drawing, sketching and the light airy touch, an artist’s eye for nature keenly observed in both soft and sharp, shade and light.
As we go through life and struggle with bad weather, periods of ill health, become overwelmed with the news of a worrying world out there – rocky shores, troubled highways and bewildering choices I am drawn back to these masters of art of the early twentieth century who took life at a different pace. So put down your phone, turn off the TV, forget the screens and get out and enjoy nature, your local landscapes, the towns and villages, the cityscapes that inspire you … and capture a moment and breathe.
